•An online survey of New Zealand adults was conducted to examine the extent and predictors of medicine sharing behaviours.•Principal component analysis was used to explore underlying behavioural factors influencing medicine sharing behaviours.•Being female, older, suffering from asthma, allergy, sleep problems or chronic pain were predictors of medicine sharing.•Several modifiable risk factors for medicine sharing behaviours have been identified.
