•NaIO3-treated retinal pigment epithelium death could be attenuated by the coculture with mesenchymal stem cells.•Mesenchymal stem cells protected against retinal pigment epithelium apoptosis via suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome.•The mitigation of NF-κB signaling and mitochondrial redox oxygen species resulted from the paracrine effect of mesenchymal stem cells.
