•Hip fracture risk is raised by at least 5-fold in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis.•The increased hip fracture risk in alcoholic cirrhosis is higher in younger adults.•The cumulative incidence of hip fracture is greater than that of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) in this population.
