Prevalence, risk factors and clinical characteristics of suicidal ideation in Chinese patients with depression.

•Our study incorporated a widespread symptomatology within and outside DSM framework, and examined the relationship with suicidal ideation in depression.•Chinese patients with major depressive disorder have a high risk to elicit suicidal ideation.•An effective risk model for suicidal ideation in depression was established with 15 variables.
