Carnitine levels and mutations in the SLC22A5 gene in Faroes patients with Parkinson's disease.

•High prevalence of Parkinson’s disease and carnitine transporter deficiency in Faroe Islands.•PD cases had significantly lower blood carnitine levels compared with controls, but only in cases and controls without the c. 95A > G mutation.•No difference in c.95A > G mutation frequency in the SLC22A5 gene among cases and controls.•The low carnitine levels among cases without the c.95A > G mutation may be due to dietary causes or due to different gut microbiota.
