•Study of Zernike and Hilbert phase plates (PP) fabricated from aC/ZrAlCu/aC films.•Oxidation of the metallic glass alloy ZrAlCu prevented by thin amorphous carbon (aC) layers.•High contrast transfer by small probability for plasmon scattering in the ZrAlCu alloy.•Strong contrast enhancement in PP TEM images of carbon nanotubes.
