•Lipoprotein lipase expression was altered in diabetic mimicked Schwann cells.•LPL mRNA was down regulated in Schwann cells during high glucose condition.•LPL expression was enhanced in hyperglycemic Schwann cells after insulin treatment.•The pathology of the sciatic nerve of neuropathic rats was improved upon insulin treatment.
