Hypoxaemia and septic shock were independent risk factors for mechanical ventilation in Bangladeshi children hospitalised for diarrhoea.

Children under five with diarrhoea who required mechanical ventilation frequently had hypoxaemia and septic shock and were more likely to die than unventilated controls.
