•For the first time, CSFs was extracted from native African NGFs.•Extracted CSFs had higher α-cellulose content than the pristine NGFs.•The extracted CSFs exhibit enhanced crystallinity and thermal stability.•The extracted CSFs may be suitable for various industrial applications.
