•Distribution and diversity of rotavirus strains from Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Nepal evaluated.•Period of study from 2009 to 2015.•Children <5 years of age hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis included in study.•G12P[8], G1P[8], and G12P[6] were the most common strains from Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Nepal respectively.•Substantial diversity of rotavirus strains seen in the three Asian countries.
