•The historical standard treatment for renal cell carcinoma(RCC) is nephrectomy.•Another treatment option to be considered is percutaneous cryoablation(PRCA).•Preservation of renal function without compromising the oncologic outcome.•PRCA is a solid alternative to traditional surgical therapies.•Medium term evidence shows excellent long-term oncological results.
