•The fungus Aspergillus japonicas MF275 produces himeic acids A–C (1–3).•1 contains a 4-pyrone ring and 3 is the corresponding 4-pyridone derivative.•1 was converted to 3 by the incorporation of an ammonium nitrogen atom.•1 was converted to 2 in MeOH.•2 and 3 were non-enzymatically formed from 1.
