•Hypoxic exercise is associated with hyperventilation, hypocapnia, and slow V˙O2p kinetics.•In normoxia, hyperventilation and hypocapnia also slow V˙O2p kinetics.•Preventing hypocapnia by CO2 breathing during hypoxic exercise slowed V˙O2p kinetics further.•In hypoxia, hyperventilation and hypocapnia may protect V˙O2p kinetics from further slowing.
