Morphological changes in the cerebellum as a result of ethanol treatment and cigarette smoke exposure: a study on astrogliosis, apoptosis and Purkinje cells.

•TOB and/or EtOH chronically effects cerebellar apoptosis and astrogliosis.•EtOH plus TOB induced an increase in GFAP immunoreactivity.•TOB per se increased apoptosis in the white matter of the cerebellum.•EtOH consumption reduced the number of Purkinje cells and TOB tempered this effect.•Our data presents perspectives for the consequence of combined licit drug use.
