•Cell proliferation was induced by HIBD in hippocampal DG of neonatal rats.•bFGF gene expression was upregulated in hippocampus following HIBD in neonatal rats, especially between 7 and 14 days.•Intraperitoneally injection of exogenous bFGF enhanced cell proliferation in hippocampal DG following neonatal HIBD.
