•We quantified excreted CORT, estradiol and progesterone in water in tungara frogs.•We used challenges, dose response, ELISA and HPLC-MS to measure three steroids.•A one-hour water bath captures physiologically informative hormone concentrations.•Water-borne CORT and estradiol were correlated with plasma and homogenate levels.
