Zileuton alleviates acute cisplatin nephrotoxicity: Inhibition of lipoxygenase pathway favorably modulates the renal oxidative/inflammatory/caspase-3 axis.

•Cisplatin-induced renal insults were accompanied by significant increases in the levels of renal 5-LOX, LTD4 and LTB4.•Zileuton reversed the functional, oxidative, inflammatory, apoptotic and structural manifestations of cisplatin nephroyoxicity.•Accordingly, the therapeutic prospect of combining zileuton with cisplatin to decrease the burden of nephrotoxicity is recommended.
