Evaluation of oxidant/antioxidant balance in Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) experimentally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei.

•Sarcoptes scabiei induces systemic oxidative damage in the peripheral blood of Iberian ibex.•The oxidative stress response of Iberian ibex after Sarcoptes scabiei infestation follows a bimodal pattern.•Sarcoptic mange induces an initial stimulation of the antioxidant system followed by a decrease in Iberian ibex.•Increased oxidative stress can be a factor in the pathophysiology of sarcoptic mange in Iberian ibex.•The oxidant/antioxidant imbalance in mange-affected ibexes is positively related with the intensity of parasitic infestation.
