•Anxiety and depression were found in 1/10 children and adolescents with epilepsy.•Anxiety and depression were associated with worse QoL in patients and family members.•Anxiety and depression were not associated with severity and duration of epilepsy and polypharmacy.•Worse QoL of child and family was associated with severity and duration of epilepsy.
