•Environmental enrichment removal induces depression-like behavior and weight gain in rats.•Enrichment removal blunts peak glucocorticoid response to acute stress.•Enrichment removal increases intake of chow, sucrose, and high fat diet.•Enrichment removal effects are prevented with antidepressant treatment.•Enrichment removal effects are not recapitulated by loss of other stimuli.
