•A predictive model of PTSD and suicidal ideation in service members is proposed.•PTSD had an indirect effect on suicidal ideation (SI) via posttraumatic cognitions.•Depression had a direct and indirect effect on SI via cognitions and social support.•Posttraumatic cognitions play an important role in SI in service members with PTSD.
