•This study examined effects of age and billboard type on drivers’ visual behavior.•Teens diverted attention away from the road more than middle age and older adults.•An Age x Billboard Type interaction was found for percent time looking at billboards.•Future work may consider how changes in visual behavior impact driving safety.
