•Relapse prevention is a clinical challenge in the management of alcohol dependence.•A support system in place enabling continuous self-monitoring may be beneficial.•We developed a smartphone application (SoberDiary) coupled with a breathalyser.•We examined the benefits of SoberDiary in assisting patients with recovery.•Increased SoberDiary compliance is associated with better clinical outcomes.
