Region-specific increases in FosB/ΔFosB immunoreactivity in the rat brain in response to chronic sleep restriction

•Rats were partially sleep-deprived for 99h using motorized wheels (3h on/1h off).•FosB/ΔFosB immunohistochemistry was used as a marker of chronic neuronal activation.•FosB/ΔFosB was induced in several sleep/wake, autonomic, and limbic brain regions.•After 6days of recovery from sleep restriction, FosB/ΔFosB was at control levels.•FosB/ΔFosB may play a role in the allostatic responses to chronic sleep restriction.
