The wandering self: Tracking distracting self-generated thought in a cognitively demanding context

•Processing self-referential material can increase the propensity for self-generated thought in a complex working memory task.•Self-generated thought interferes with rehearsal in a complex working memory task and this can be tracked with eye tracking.•Mind wandering is associated with a lower average pupil size than on-task thinking in a demanding task.
