Adverse childhood experiences are associated with self-regulation and the magnitude of the error-related negativity difference

•Adolescents with greater rather than fewer adverse childhood experiences showed larger error-related negativity differentiation.•Adolescents with greater rather than fewer adverse childhood experiences showed poorer self-regulation.•The association between adverse childhood experiences and the error-related negativity was reduced by self-regulation.
