Topographical differences of frontal-midline theta activity reflect functional differences in cognitive control abilities

•FM theta occurs in a variety of situations characterized by high cognitive control demands.•Different theta topographies in proactive and reactive control tasks are proposed.•Theta distribution was focal at frontal sites in a proactive and broader in a reactive control task.•Theta oscillations might act functionally different depending on task requirements and the activated neural network.
