Admixture analysis of age of onset in generalized anxiety disorder

•Admixture analyses objectively identified a bimodal distribution of age-of-onset in generalized anxiety disorder with a cut-off of 24 years.•Early-onset generalized anxiety is associated with being female, higher education and higher neuroticism, but not with greater severity.•Late-onset GAD is associated with– and probably induced by- medical comorbidity or functional impairment.
