Acute social stress before the planning phase improves memory performance in a complex real life-related prospective memory task

•Acute stress enhanced prospective memory across the course of performance phase.•Time- and event-dependent prospective memory were enhanced by acute stress.•Prospective memory performance of control participants may reflect a primacy effect.•Acute stress did not affect the planning phase of prospective memory.
