Channel Quality Prediction In Lte: How Far Can We Look Ahead Under Realistic Assumptions?

摘要
Channel Quality Prediction (CQP) is an essential function for anticipatory and proactive Radio Resource Management (RRM). CQP estimates the wireless channel for multiple time slots in advance, thus, providing a new degree of freedom at the cost of a prediction error. In this paper, we carefully study the error when Kalman-based predictors are used to predict the large-scale statistics of the LTE downlink channel. After presenting our predictor assumptions, we describe optimal and practical filters to isolate the slow channel process. Then, we study the prediction error in a realistic LTE scenario. Our study verifies that practical channel predictors already reach horizons in the order of seconds at a reasonable error bound. This promising finding shows that anticipatory and proactive adaptation is already practicable in mobile networks today.
