•The incidence of calcanear fractures in Finland has not increased during past 26 years.•The mean incidence was 9.6/100,000 person years in men and 3.9/100,000 in women.•Male patients were clearly younger (median 43 years) than women (median 61 years).•The incidence of operative treatment of peaked in 2000 (3.6/100,000).
