•Recombinant flagellin is able to increase the degree of cell death mediated all by FAS, TNF or cytotoxic T cells.•The mitochondrial apoptotic pathway was not affected by recombinant flagellin.•Flagellin is able to upregulate the apoptotic and necroptotic pathway through promoting RIP1-dependent signalling events.
