•Girls with congenital heart disease (CHD) were interviewed on pregnancy/childbirth.•The girls grew in awareness of pregnancy/childbirth and their own disease.•These changes in turn influenced perceptions of their own future pregnancies.•This entire process of change was conceptualized as exploring their future selves.
