Declining structured diabetes education in those with type 2 diabetes: A plethora of individual and organisational reasons.

•Many participants could have benefited from attending SDE.•Perceiving that diabetes is not serious is a barrier to attending education.•DSNs and GPs are the primary gatekeepers to education in type 2 diabetes.•Education must be considered on an individual basis, one size will not fit all.•For a number of people structured diabetes education will never be an option.
