•A model of an unequal-area dynamic facility layout problem is described.•A heuristic Wang–Landau (WL) sampling algorithm is put forward.•Vacant point strategy, pushing strategy and pressuring strategy are proposed to update layout.•The proposed algorithm is applied to solve the unequal-area dynamic facility layout problem.
