•BCLC cells expand the genetic background of HCV in vitro tools.•BCLC-9 cells express HCV receptors but are refractory to HCV entry.•BCLC-5-C8.1/miR122 cells support HCV entry and replication.•BCLC-5-C8.1/miR122 do not allow HCV particle production despite ApoE expression.•BCLC cells are novel tools to study HCV life cycle and virus-host interactions.
