•Most hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients suffered HCT-related complications during the post-transplantation period.•Most of the HCT-related complications occurred within 180 days post-transplantation.•Autologous and allogeneic HCT recipients with complications had a higher hospital readmission rate than those without complications.•Regardless of HCT type, patients with complications had higher costs than those without complications.•Autologous HCT recipients with complications had a lower probability of surviving than those without complications.
