•We formulate a novel online diffusion provenance problem locating in large networks.•A new online regression learning model to identify diffusion provenances in large networks.•We present an online stochastic algorithm to solve the proposed online regression learning model.•Experiments on synthetic and real-world data demonstrate significant performance gain for online diffusion provenances discovery.
