•We studied an extractive summarization system to aid systematic reviews development.•We extracted sample size, group size, and PICO values from full text PDF reports.•Computer-generated summaries are potential alternative sources to manual summaries.•Machine learning and NLP approaches are useful in automatic text summarization.
