How do we protect software from reverse engineering? For decades, this problem was addressed by attempting to write (or transform programs into) intricate, circumvoluted, and complicated code. However, there's little proof that obfuscation protects software from being "deobfuscated." Computer scientists and engineers are now working on bringing obfuscation from a wobbly art to a sound, sturdy, and provable methodology. Following a major cryptography breakthrough in 2013, secure obfuscation and other schemes that were once considered science fiction might just become reality.
