Acoustic hologram of the metasurface with phased arrays via optimality criteria

•The acoustic holography for any desired images is realized by introducing wave phase shifts.•The metamaterial-based hologram composed of helical units is invented.•A new optimization algorithm has been proposed for seek the phased arrays at the hologram plane.•The desired acoustic images with a high contrast ratio have been achieved numerically and experimentally.
