Fully automated 2D–3D registration and verification

•We propose algorithms that enable fully automated CT to X-ray registration.•Our techniques tackle the initialisation and result verification stages.•Registration capture range and speed suitable for clinical use.•A correct registration rate of 95% is produced for images within the capture range.•Incorrect registrations are detected automatically.
