•We evaluate CCI-SM compared to NDVI and modeled soil moisture in East Africa.•Spatio-temporal coverage is poor prior to 1992 but improves with time.•CCI-SM and modeled soil moisture are significantly correlated in Kenya.•CCI-SM and modeled soil moisture detect the same wet and dry extreme events.•NDVI, microwave and modeled soil moisture provide ‘convergence of evidence’ for remote drought monitoring.
