•A joint optimization model for condition-based maintenance and economic manufacturing quantity is proposed.•The assumption that the degradation process has discrete state space has been relaxed.•The average cost rate is relatively more sensitive to the changes of setup cost and inventory holding cost.•The cost savings from the joint optimization model are considerable when the costs related to unexpected failures are high.
