Does content categorization lead to knowledge building? An experiment in a social bookmarking service.

•We aimed to verify whether content categorization leads to knowledge building (KB).•We ran an experiment in the social bookmarking service Uxmarks.com.•We measured the perception of KB×user participation (lurking or posting behavior).•There was no correlation between KB perception and user participation.•In other words, and lurkers and posters could equally benefit from the service.
