QoS-enabled Component Middleware for Distributed Real-Time and Embedded Systems

Component middleware technologies are playing an increasingly important role in the development of dis-tributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems, in a variety of application domains ranging from military shipboard computing [1] to commercial inventory tracking [2]. The challenges of designing, implementing, and evaluating component middleware that can meet the needs of such diverse DRE systems have motivated several important advances in the state-of-the-art. This chapter summarizes those advances and uses exam-ples from several application domains to show how these resulting technologies can be applied to meet the needs of DRE systems.
