•Nitrogen regulation is vital for innovative utilization of NH3 as an energy.•CaO effected only the dominant reaction at the target temperature.•CaO improved the char-N through the formation of CaCN2, Ca(CN)2 and Ca2N.•Active calcium promoted some N-containing compounds deamination to increase NH3.•Calcium reduced the activation energy of SS pyrolysis by about 0–40 kJ/mol.
