•The prevalence of MCPyV was significantly higher in primary porocarcinoma than in healthy skin.•MCPyV DNA levels were similar between tumour and healthy skin samples.•HPV16 was found in parocarcinoma but not in healthy skin biopsies.•The prevalence of beta-HPV DNA was high in both tumour and healthy skin samples.
