Harvest in different years of growth influences chemical composition of Echinacea angustifolia roots

•Three active compounds of roots of E. angustifolia accessions harvested in various years were determined.•The highest content of marker compounds was found in the root cortex and thin roots.•The lowest content of marker compounds was found in the root internal tissue.•The marker principles of the entire root varied with the accessions and with the years.
