•We compare two methods for virus detection on raspberry fruit surface.•The direct RNA extraction method includes fewer steps than the standard method.•The direct RNA extraction method allows higher viral extraction efficiency.•At low concentrations, only the direct RNA extraction method allows recovering viruses.
